Southern Praying Mantis is a Chinese martial art that dates from the time of the Manchurian Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). This art was developed by the Shaolin Monks as a deadly fighting form to be used against the Manchus as the monks endeavored to restore the Ming Dynasty. Southern Praying Mantis is a close-range fighting system that puts emphasis on short-range power and has aspects of both internal and external techniques. Like most other southern styles, it focuses on hand-strikes. Unlike many other Chinese arts, this art places no value on aesthetics as it was created purely for combat.
