Silambam is the Indian martial art of stick fighting originating from South India. Its name supposedly comes from silam or silambu, meaning "hill" in Tamil, and bamboo, which is in fact originally a Marhat word. Silambamboo was shortened to silambam meaning "bamboo from the hills", as sticks were usually made out of a special kind of filled yellow bamboo found in that region.

Silambam is the term also used to refer to the stick or walking staff used in this art which is 5 and 1/2 feet long. An apprentice of the art is usually taught basic forms and patterns to change the spins of the stick without disrupting its motion. Eventually, the apprentice will learn advanced forms of footwork that coordinates well with the stick's movement. It must be noted that Silambam is a martial art that emphasizes self-defence; the goal of this art is to defend oneself from multiple attackers.
