Shinkendo is a Japanese martial art of swordsmanship based on realistic, effective strategies and gradually, but solidly built technique. It was created by Toshishiro Obata Kaiso in order to revive the Bushido or the "way of the warrior". This art focuses on the use of the sword safely and effectively because it requires the use of a real sword in its training. Training in Shinkendo also inclused tamashigiri or "test-cutting" which enables a student to learn the proper grip, correct cutting angles, proper stances, effective combative distances, and strategies. Normally, straw matting-type material and bamboo are used as cutting targets.
The difference in Kendo and Shinkendo lie in the equipment they use. Aside from the use of a live blade, Shinkendo does not use a bogu, instead it only uses a normal Gi for protection.
