Shaolin Kung Fu or Shaolin Quan is a Chinese term generally referring to the external styles of Kung Fu. However, when the classic book Boxing Classic: Essential Boxing Methods came out in 1784 claiming that Chinese Boxing originated in the Henan Shaolin Temple, martial artists around China exploited the name Shaolin and claimed that they possess the original teachings of the Monastery.

Shaolin Kung Fu is a combination of both external martial arts and internal martial arts. Its internal elements can be found in its breathing exercises and belief in proper meditation. In fact, many styles of Shaolin Kung Fu emphasize physical fitness through the practice of martial arts rather than focusing on its combative apsects.
