San Budo is a “freestyle” or “hybrid” martial art deriving mainly from Tae Kwon Do, Kempo Jiu Jitsu, and Nihon Tetsuken-Ryu Karate with aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Shaolin Kung Fu. Founded in 2007 by Bret Gordon, San Budo caught on quickly and was recognized by the World Black Belt Bureau (2007) and the International Association of Martial Arts Founders (2008). Given a Japanese name, San Budo is loosely translated to mean “Three Martial Ways,” giving credit to its three main components. In San Budo, various katas or poomsaes originating from China, Japan, and Korea are practiced. Most notable are the Taekwondo (Kukkiwon) poomsaes Koryo and Keumgang, as well as the five animal forms used in Shaolin Kung Fu. Practitioners of San Budo engage in 3 main styles of fighting: Continuous/Full Contact, Point Sparring, and Kickboxing. Holders of Dan or Black Belt ranks may also engage in mixed martial arts (MMA). San Budo uses Japanese titles commonly heard around many dojos, although the interpretation and qualifications to be awarded the titles have been changed. [1]
