Re-curve Bow

The Re-curve Bow is the most prevalent on the archery line. This bow is a straight bow with a slight curve at the top and the bottom. Re-curves come in all shapes, sizes (usually around 5-6 feet in length) and colors and are made out of all sorts of different composite materials. Very little “kick” when releasing the string and a lighter pull makes the re-curve a very popular bow for beginners and technical shooters.

History

Characteristics

The recurving the ends of a bow increases its cast. The recurved bow will shoot faster and farther than a straight ended bow of the same weight. But because quickness sends any errors in shooting right to the arrow, some stability is sacrificed. Some prefer recurves simply for their smooth draw and irresistible beauty. Recurved bows make fine weapons and for those wishing a very short but powerful bow.

Modern Versions

The re-curve bow is the most popularly used for modern competitions that is why it is someties used the Olympic style bow. It has a handle (or riser) made of wood or metal and recurving limbs made of wood and fibreglass laminate. More expensive limbs will use carbon fibre. Beginners usually start with an inexpensive basic form and then invest in more developed models as their skill grows. It normally comes to pieces for easy transport (called a take down bow) and to allow the components to be upgraded. A sight is fitted for consistent accuracy in competition and it can be fitted with various aids to tune the set up to the individual archer’s style. Some archers use them without the sight and aids, and this is called “barebow” shooting. In competition it is placed in its own category.
