Qi or Chi is a fundamental concept of traditional Chinese culture, believed to be part of every living thing as a kind of “life force” or “spiritual energy.” Chinese, Japanese, and Korean martial arts seek to develop a student's qi (Japanese ki) in order to increase his/her ability to generate power beyond what the muscles alone can produce. In some arts, such as Tai Chi Chuan and Aikijutsu, qi is even meant to replace muscle power altogether.
