Pehlwani or Indian Wrestling is a Hindu martial art dating back to the 11th century. It is said that this martial art is an offshoot of the combination of Hindu and Pakistani forms of wrestling. Pehlwan is a Persian word that means "warrior" or "champion"; it is also used to denote those who excel on the battleground.

A dangal, which is what a Pehlwani match is called, consists of gripping and holding which happens in the akhara' or mud pit, and after each competition, the champion Pehlwan gets the Gurz or Gada (a weapon that looks like a huge mace made from silver and gold, inset with precious stones). A winner is declared when a decision from the a panel of judges, a knockout, stoppage or submission is made. The undefeated champions hold the title Rustum-i Hind (India) or Rustum-i Pakistan.
