Turkish Oil Wrestling

Turkish Oil Wrestling or Yağlı güreş is the traditional wrestling of the Turks and their national sport as well. It is called oil wrestling because the pehvlani (wrestlers) cover their bodies with olive oil and water before a match. This is done to protect their bodies from the extreme hea tcaused by the sun, beacuse in the past, a single wrestling match can last for days. The first wrestler whose navel is first to be exposed loses the match and holding of the shoulders to the ground for a period of time is not tantamount to pinning.
