From Karate, Kungfu, Wrestling, Mixed Fighting Information Source
The Morion was an open helmet which first appeared in the mid 16th century and was worn almost exclusively by foot soldiers. Very similar in design to the Cabasset, the morion was relatively inexpensive to manufacture and thus was popular for issue to soldiers. With its wide brim and comb atop the helmet, the morion lent itself to extravagant alterations. In many cases, the morion’s upturned brim and comb would be embellished so much the helmet became very heavy and inconvenient in a fight. While the morion is most associated with the Spanish conquistadores in the New World, it was actually very popular as a helmet for pikemen and soldiers throughout the rest of Europe.
