Maculele

MaculelĂȘ is a martial art as well as a dance done with sticks, sometimes performed with machetes or even fire. It is practiced around a circle of people called roda with atabaques (tall, wooden, Afro-Brazilian hand drum) positioned at the entrances. The ceremony starts when the leader of the group sings, then two people begin to enter the circle striking thier own sticks called grimas with the beat of the atabaque drums. In the first three beats, they strike their own sticks together, making expressive and athletic dance movements, and on each fourth beat, they strike each other's respective right-hand stick together. The succeeding movements produce a beautiful display of "mock" stick fighting.

The Maculele ceremony is similar to the practice of Capoeira.
