Judogi

The Judogi is the traditional uniform worn during Judo training which is made from heavier materials compared to the Karategi. It has two parts, the uwagi or the heavy jacket, and the lighter zubon, or pants. This type of uniform is highly specialized for wear-and-tear situations because of the grappling nature of Judo. The Judogi is likely derived from traditional Japanese undergarments found during the end of the 20th century which was designed for heavy work. It is important for every Judoka to observe the saying: "the left side of the gi must cross over the right side." This is because crossing the right side of the gi over the left is normally reserved for the dead.

Unlike any other gi, the Judogi is strictly defined and regulated by the International Judo Federation because of the disadvantage that a user might experience when wearing an improper-sized Judogi. These rules define how long the sleeves and legs must be as well as how loose-fitting the Judogi can be. In addition, various organizations and events define such matters as allowing for commercial and team/national patches and competitor's names to be attached to the Judogi. In international competitons, only the traditional all-white and all-blue uniforms are allowed.
