Jogo do Pau which literally means "stick fencing" is Potuguese martial art that developed in the Northern regions of the country. It was created as a self-defence art that could help an individual survive bad encounters with robbers and other violent occurence. It is an art of combat with great mobility and high efficiency.
There are numerous references in novels to the devastating effects that the so-called "rixas de pau" (Jogo do Pau battles) and "varrer de feira" (market sweeping), and to the bad reputation that the fighters earned. It was known as the martial art used by the guerillas led by Zé do Telhado during the occupation of Napoleon in Portugal.
