Isshin Ryu is an Okinwan martial that is a combination of Shorin-Ryu and Goju Ryu Karate. It was designed specifically for personal combat; however, Americans have modified the fighting practice to enable students to participate in sporting events. It emphasizes the non-twisting "vertical" punch, in which the punch is delivered with the knuckles in a vertical line, with the thumb at the top. This art features the use of the traditionally low kicks, and closed natural stances. Unlike traditional karate, it gives a greater amount of emphasis on the balance of the use of the hands and feet for offensive and defensive weapons. This art promotes a strong body and physical conditioning, and self-defense awareness and understanding.
