Hung Fut is an ecletic martial art from southern China combining the powerful techniques of Hung Gar and the soft and flowing movements of Fut Gar. It is a mixture of both internal and external techniques using angular, linear and circular movements, producing strikes that are explosive yet graceful. Because of these elements, this martial is considered one of the best styles because of its speed and power combined with beauty and practicality.

History

Hung Fut was created in the early 1600s by Wun Lei, a monk at the Fujian Shaolin Temple and a master of both Hung Gar and Fut Gar. Perhaps the most famous of all practitioners was Hung Ju Sing, aka The White-haired Devil, who fought many official matches and is said to have never lost. The 8th generation Grandmaster, Sifu Tai Yim, immigrated from China to the United States in 1977. He now teaches in Kensington, Maryland, a suburb outside of Washington D.C.

Techniques

Hung Fut combines the low, rooted stances of Hung Gar with the internal and relaxed circular moves of Fut Gar. Like boxing, it emphasizes use of the jab. As with most southern styles of Kung Fu, it uses mainly close-range hand-strikes with kicks kept mostly below the waist.
