Hua Quan

Hua Quan or China Style Boxing is a martial art from Shandong Province in northern China. Its origins date back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and is considered the most original martial art developed without the influence of Shaolin Kung Fu. Hua Quan is characterized by its smooth, well-connected movements. A sort of complicating quirk is the fact that the term "Hua Quan" is also sometimes used, like "Kung Fu," to denote Chinese martial arts in general.

History

Hua Quan was first created by Tsai Mao, a knight who lived in the 8th century. He is remembered for killing the son of a noble family, a crime for which he spent the rest of his life in hiding. The modern style was developed by his descendants, Tsai Tai and Tsai Gang, two well-known martial artists of the 1100s.

Techniques

Techniques are mostly long, fully-extended kicks and punches executed with lightning speed. Practitioners learn breathing exercises to spread the flow of oxygen throughout the body.
