Fong Ngan or Phoenix Eye Fist is a Chinese martial art that originated in Hubei Province in southern China. It is characterized by the use of strikes with the first joint of a slightly protruding index finger, which is said to resemble the eye of the mythical bird, the Phoenix. The Phoenix Eye strike is also used in other styles of Kung Fu, including Zui Quan (Drunken Boxing).

Techniques

In this style, the basic attacking technique is delivered with the foreknuckle, palm strike, finger poke, ridge-hand, and knife-hand forms. Fong Ngan’s only kick is the front snap-kick, delivered to the groin area. It is remarkable to note that Fong Ngan has no formal stances; instead, the practitioner must learn how to crowd an opponent in order to force him/her to make a mistake. Fighters using this style are known for attacking head-on; retreating is not an option, though a Fong Ngan fighter may side-step an attack and then counter at an angle. Throws are also part of this style.
