The Five Major Southern Family Styles of Kung Fu were founded by five eponymous elders:
- Mok Gar - founded by Mok Qing Gil;
- Hung Gar - founded by Hung Heigun;
- Lau Gar - founded by Lau Samngan;
- Choy Gar - founded by Choy Gau Yi;
- and Li Gar - founded by Li Yaosan.
These five styles are thus called to distinguish them from family styles which originated in northern China. All these styles, like most southern styles, emphasize hand-strikes and evasive footwork.
The five elders listed above should not be confused with the Five Elders of Shaolin. The link between the two is that all five of the above studied under or trained with Ji Shin, so that he is considered co-founder of all of the above five styles.
