The escrima stick(s) is/are usually made of rattan (a type of hardwood found in the Philippines) which makes light but dependably durable. Its durability is often tested when used against a bladed opponent. This type of wood does not splinter making it a safe traning equipment, and it only deteriorates when when used under extreme abuse.

Another type wood used in making the escrima stick is the kamagong or ironwood (a hardwood also found in the Philippines), but sticks made from the mentioned is not used i sparring due to the fact that it causes serious injuries. Care of these weapons only requires frequent polishing, and this is a must for every escrimador because one of the basic precepts of escrim is: "Eskrima sticks are a reflection of the user, their system and methodology." Common lenghts of the sticks measure from 24" to 36"
