Emei Quan, or Omei Quan, is a Chinese martial art known for its comprehensive system that includes empty-hand and also weapon forms. It also utilizes martial arts strategy, spacing, and blending to achieve maximum combat effectiveness and proper self-defense. It provides both external training for the body, and internal training to cultivate the individual’s life energy. Mount Omei is renowned for its rich diversity of wildlife, especially many species of monkey, hence the many animal forms practiced by the students at the Shaolin monastery located there.

History

This art evolved on O Mei Shan (Great White Mountain) in Sichuan Province, one of the famous "martial mountains" in China where many styles of martial art originated (others include Wudang Shan, Song Shan, and Nine Lotus Mountain, all sites of Shaolin temples).

Techniques

Emei Quan is famous for its animal styles because it uses Monkey Style and other unique southern styles in its training. Fast hand-strikes are delivered in rapid succession. Students learn to change direction while attacking. Low, stable stances with very little movement are characteristic of this style; however, jumps are executed lightly and quickly and its movements are very diverse. Many hand-strikes generate power from the wrist.
