Chuojiao (literally tr. "poking feet") is one of the oldest Chinese martial arts and is also considered one of the most beautiful and deadliest. Being a northern style, it employs use of the feet as the primary weapon in combat. This art is known for its clever footwork and leg-attacking techniques.

History

Chuojiao was created by one Deng Liang in the time of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It became extremely popular in northern China in the following centuries. Among its most famous students were General Yue Fei (12th century CE), and Shi Dakai and Zhao Tsanyi, two leaders of the Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864) against the Qing Dynasty.

Styles

Of the many styles of Chuojiao, the most popular is Chuojiao Fanziquan, which combines the kicks of Choujiao with the hand-strikes of Fanziquan, making a more complete style. It is said to have originated in the city of Peking (Beijing).

Technique

Some of the basic foot and leg techniques include stomping, heel kicking, pointing, entangling, juggling, treading, and grinding. In practice, each step is followed by a kick, with alternating hand and foot movements.
