Choy Gar ("Choy Family") or Rat Kung Fu is a Chinese martial art that was founded by the legendary Choy Gau Yi and further developed by his students during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Its practitioners continuously develop their inner strength (qi) while practicing a low stance which is the style's basic foundation for creating effective movements, abilities and actions of the body.

Choy Gar features a low stance form with rapid footwork which resembles that of a rat, while the arms and body are meant to resemble the quick attacking movements of the snake. Choy Gar's techniques were among those incorporated into Choy Lee Fut, an even more famous style.

History

Choy Gau Yi originally studied Snake Kung Fu but then modified it by making the stances lower and adding more kicks. He added swifter footwork resembling that of a rat, hence the other name for the style, Rat Kung Fu. It is one of the famous Five Major Southern Family Styles of the Chinese martial arts.
