Modern Arnis Mano-Mano Filipino Martial Arts is duly recognized and registered by the Philippine Government under by the Security Exchange Commission and the Department of Trade and Industry with Registry Number 00156129. The MAMFMA was first registered July 21, 1995 and the logo name of Modern Arnis Mano-Mano Filipino Martial Arts was copyrighted at the National Library, Manila on October 6, 1995 with Copyright registry no. O 95-1006 by Punong Lakan Garitony C. Nicolas which he called Arnis Nicolas System (ARNIS). The Arnis Nicolas System promotes the classical, traditional and modern approach of teaching the principles and philosophy of the art of stick fighting - Arnis.

Arnis de Mano or estocada, the Philippines' very own firing art. Arnis was a forerunner of the bladed weapon called “Mali,” an ancient Malayan word, which means a bladed weapon, utilized as "sword". Sometimes Arnis is called "kali," "escrima," "pang-or," "pamalo," "muton," "baston" or "estocada." Arnis is a stick fighting art of the Filipinos. It was derived from the English word “harness”. First, Spanish people called it "Arnes" and a Tagalog orthographic translator called it Arnis.

MAMFMA MISSION

As a Filipino Martial Arts, it's committed to fostering Nationalism, to instill social concerns and political awareness and to participate actively in community developments.

The mission of MAMFMA is two fold: first is to foremost is to regain the lost glory of the art as an international sport and martial arts and restore in every Filipinos heart its cultural heritage and indigenous value and second, to advance the camaraderie of Arnis practitioners under one roof and common goal and leadership without loosing their individuality as a style, system or affiliation.

History

Origins

Punong Lakan was born on July 21, 1968 Manila Philippines, to Antonio G. Nicolas (deceased) and Zenaida F. Carlos. He is referred to as Punong Lakan - master of the hardwood-cane. As well as being considered a master in his field of martial arts, he is also recognized as the Father of Modern Sinawali. He was barely 13 when the passion and determination to pursue his training in the field of Arnis led him to another Master of renown, flourishing under the tutelage of Grandmaster Ernesto A. Presas Sr.

Punong Lakan completed his Arnis Professional course at the National College of Physical Education (NCPE) at Pamantasang Lungsod ng Maynila in 2006. He is learned in the various systems and principles of the arts of discipline, having gained his knowledge from experts of their own field, from Grandmaster Nemesio Puno, Prof. Armando C. Soteco, Grandmaster Benjamin B. Luna and Sensei Danny San Joaquin.

The cliched theory that masters of a martial art have to be hold true true martial artist, as he earned recognition for being the Most Outstanding Instructor of the Year on December 19, 1987, at the humble age of 19. He was awarded by the International Philippine Martial Arts Federation and ARJUKEN Karate Association by, Grandmaster Ernesto Presas himself. On July 23, 2005 he was recognized by the United States of Martial Arts Association (USMAA) as one of the International Instructor Hall of Fame Awardees.

Development

Punong Lakan decided to promote and share the knowledge and principles of the stick fighting called Arnis at the British School of Manila (ASA), Datamex Computer College, Rockwell Sports Club Makati, Pasay City North High School - BSP, International Electronic Technology Institute and UST Martial Arts Club. He was invited to become the fighting scene director in one of the GMA 7’s Fantaserye Etheria (Encantadia Book 2). At the same time, he trained the actors and actresses of the said Fantaserye. He conducted seminar trainings at Metro Manila Development Authority Traffic Office Command (MMDA-TOC), Wack-Wack Village Security and Safety Department, MASAKAF Foundation Inc. and Landnet Inc. – Subdivision Police. Before he reached the path of success he first became an instructor of Arjuken Karate Club, Lyceum Martial Arts Club, Hataw-do Martial Arts Club and Kalisphere Philippines.

Persent Day Arnis

Since then he became the Arnis Mano-Mano Instructor of many local and international celebrities including other martial arts experts who came to learn Arnis in the Philippines.

Punong Lakan was the adviser of Combination of Arnis Kickboxing and Combative Arts Gym (CAKCA), MAMFMA Intramuros Chapter, MAMFMA Malasiqui, Pangasinan Chapter, MAMFMA Victoria Australia Chapter, Philippine Arnis Mano-Mano Gym Dubai Chapter (PHILAMM) and MAMFMA Wiesbaden Germany Chapter. In government, he acts as the Arnis Instructor at the Philippine Indigenous Games and Sports Savers Association Incorporated hosted by the Philippine Tourism Authority.

The Four Books of Arnis

Modern Sinawali

Modern Sinawali (Arnis Nicolas System) gives all the training process that practitioner needs to know and learn because of the various criss cross movements of the hand. Learning such SINAWALI will surely improve and develop the Arnisador's footwork, agility, speed, timing, coordination, instinct, control, skills and proper distance. The Modern Sinawali is not limited to double sticks only, it could also be done with one stick against two sticks, stick against Bankaw, one against two attackers, Bankaw against Gilingan, mano-mano and etc...

In this system the practitioner can combine any two or more different kind of Sinawali. The Modern Sinawali has 363 different kind of Sinawali that Punong Lakan develops and incorporates on the art and philosophy of stick fighting _ ARNIS.

The author includes in this book the art of continuous locking, the priniple of counter to counter freestyle disarming and the art of counter to counter Mano-Mano Locking.

The Principles of a Good Arnisador is a book that discusses the principles of Arnis Nicolas System (ARNIS) and its Art, including the development of stick fighting - the Martial Arts World.

The author provides broad-based and integrative techniques of self-defense in response with the goals and philosophy of this significant Art of Fighting.

The "Punong Lakan" realizes these principles thru the years of his experiences, dedication, vocation and commitment in teaching and sharing his knowledge and skills in stick fighting.

When general principles are used to stimulate, direct, guide and evaluate to conduct of life, they are translated into means and measures of action. Only actions can change things in the direction of unity and stability. To accomplish this change, action must be directed by leading principles. This requires that they be brought into relationship with facts and practices of everyday life. Principles therefore, are the best guide to make a MAN, effective and productive if can be interpreted best in the light of well-established practices.

The guiding value of principles depends not only upon the soundness and various skills, but also upon the individual’s acceptance, understanding and ability to apply them.

In the field of martial arts, the true power of Arnis does not end with its techniques although these are powerful but if not executed and observed along the essential principles, the usefulness of Arnis or other martial arts will be in vein. It is important therefore that an Arnisador should be guided by principles, by heart.

A good Arnisador should be respectful to opponent as a person and as sportsman, with dignity and worthy of respect. Sportsmanship is the true measure of a player with good moral character, well discipline, sincere, with self-control and loyal to his mentor. In relation to his confederates, he should maintain wholesome and cordial relation. Exercise discretion in matters concerning confidential information about his colleagues. Should be willing to share his knowledge and experience with fellow members and should make due acknowledgement of assistance received from associates. And the most important is not appropriate the work of others to claim credit for him.

An Arnisador can continually grow in his profession and uphold the highest possible standard that will earn for his social recognition if he was equipped with principles.

The Official ANYO of MAMFMA is all about the form done by each student from beginner to black belt using the three forms of play of Arnis: Single Stick, Two Sticks and a combination of Arnis stick and a shorter one which represents the espada y daga system. His main interest here is to share the stylish yet effective Anyo of Modern Arnis Mano-Mano which develops the mental and physical set ups. Learning such form will increase the body and mind coordination and it helps a lot the student to memorize and familiarize the techniques they are learning.

Time come and goes yet Martial Arts are generally thought of or identified as in terms of style, system and self - defense techniques. Some uses their skills barefooted and empty hand, while others uses weapons. Fortunately, Modern Arnis Mano – Mano (headed by Punong Lakan Garitony C. Nicolas most commonly known as “SIR PET”), is one of the famous Filipino Martial Arts here in the Philippines who teaches both weaponries and empty hand techniques plus the so-called “ANYO” (Kata or Form).

For more than two decades “SIR PET” has practiced and taught Filipino Martial Arts and the thousands of students that have learned from him - locals and foreigners, he has noted a similarity in the questions that were asked like: •What effective style to use in a certain situation? •What if you don’t have weapons, what will you do in actual combat? •What should a student do for him to remember and develop proper balancing/pacing etc.?

These are some of the frequently asked questions by the students and so Sir Pet modernized and modified the techniques and style but not leaving behind the traditional and classical way, he decided to reveal in his fourth book entitled “THE OFFICAIL ANYO OF MAMFMA”. It’s all about the form done by each student from beginner to black belt using One Arnis Stick, Two Arnis Sticks, and a combination of Arnis stick and a shorter one which represents the Arnis y Daga System. His main interest here is to share the stylish yet effective form of Modern Arnis Mano –Mano which develops the Mental and Physical set ups. Learning such form will increase the Body and Mind Coordination and it helps a lot the student to memorize and familiarize the techniques he / she are learning. Through constant practice, the learner can react on what he / she see and can easily adapt what ever the nature of their surroundings. Sistemang Pang-Oran was the first book that Punong Lakan was published year 2000. The sistemang pang-oran is a full contact stick fighting (Arnis Kickboxing system - ARKIBOS) that played by the Modern Arnis Mano-Mano Filipino Martial Arts practitioner founded by Punong Lakan Garitony Nicolas. The word Pang-Oran comes from the Northern part of the Philippines, which means paluan in Filipino and stick fighting in English.

The Sistemang Pang-Oran involves the striking of Arnis, disarming, punching and kicking techniques (for amateur rule) and sweeping and throwing (for professional rule). Pang-oran was developed for the love of a certain Filipino martial Art that is ARNIS. It came from the heart of a real disciple of arnis. Punong Lakan stresses that without his students he can not develop the Pang-Oran system and for watching and observing different tournament like the Full Contact, karate, Arnis, tae-kwon-do etc... He is just like a composer who needs inspiration to be able to compose a song.

Training

Arnis has three phases, the bladed weapon, stick and empty hand. Bladed weapon such as kampilan, utak balisong, pinsawali, susuwat, kambantuli, janap, banjat, gayang, panabas, bankon, kalis, gunong and puñal.

In Arnis there are three forms of play, the Solo baston (single sticks), the sword and dagger (espada y daga) and the criss-cross fashion (double sticks).

Single stick or solo baston

It is the major fighting system of Arnis. Solo baston is not limited to stick alone it applies to bladed weapons. The system further can be extended to other ordinary objects such as umbrella, pen, walking sticks, comb, magazines and newspaper that are good examples of weapons. The solo baston system has traditional, modern techniques and applications. These techniques are the basic systems that develop skills in catching, grabbing, pulling and pushing, disarming, locking, striking and blockings techniques.

Arnis y Daga

It is a simplified form of traditional Espada y daga or sword and dagger technique. The weapons used a short stick or a knife and a rattan stick. In practicing the Arnis y Daga the proponent learns to combine long and short-range tactics. With the weapons the concept of Arnis y Daga is best expressed mail in long and winding road combinations such as an upper cut and a straight ahead.

Double stick or Doble Baston

It is another major form of play in Arnis system. Which is sometimes called Sinawali. Swinging the cane in a criss-cross movement perform s double stick. The movement of the Doble baston are essentially artistic but can also be used for self-defense purposes. The Sinawali is an intrinsic part of Arnis practice, which requires the use of two sticks.

Techniques

MANO-MANO

Mano-Mano is the Filipino art of Hand-to-Hand combats. The art embodies all the techniques applied to stick fighting techniques, except the practitioner uses the different limbs of his body as striking tools, in lieu of the weapons. The technique movements and rhythm in Mano-Mano are similar to those of Arnis with slight deviations. Mano-Mano is a system that combines effective defensive and counter offensive tactics from all martial arts available in the world. Although, generally called a street fighting art. Mano-Mano prides itself of the simple and easy but debilitating techniques it posses. Mano-Mano is the empty hand of stick fighting (Arnis) developed centuries ago by the Filipino Fighters. Arnis is the “Mother” of Mano-Mano an original and native Filipino Art. It has gained popular adherents from all countries have been trying to preserve the genius of its forms that it desired to be left unscathed by the influence of other arts. The perspective gave rise to questioning the validity of its claims to defend the practitioner when he has no “rattan stick” with him. The constant sneer from other arts made way to the Art of Manok-Manok which is the art of the cane is also the art of the hand in absence of a stick the hand to hand can function as replacement. Manok-Manok techniques and movements are derived from the use of Arnis, escrima or kali: which is literally the extension of our feet.

SINAWALI

The term Sinawali which was also known as doble bsatonb is deprived from the word “Sawali” meaning to weave. Sinawali is the material used by early Filipinos in building the nimpa hut or Bahay kubo. The Sinwali are interwoven into each other, hence the criss-cross pattern adapted by the sport. The classical Sinawali has only three techniques namely: Single Sinawali, Double Sinawali and Redonda.

THE MODERNIZATION OF SAWALI

Punong Lakan Garitony C. Nicolas has interwoven much new variation to arnis , which he named Modern Sinawali. This Modern Sinawali has three hundred and sixty three (363) different variations among which are the Peripheral Sinawali, Double X Sinawali, Single X Sinawali, etc. Because of such contribution Punong Lakan was regarded as the Anti of Modern Sinawali. In Modern Sinawali is the art that should be develop the speed, timing, harmonious and power. The Sinawali improves the footwork, body movement and reflexes which is essential in Arnis training. Thus, the Sinawali serves as an important preliminary exercise to the advance techniques of solo baston, Doble baston and Arnis y daga leading to Modern Mano-Mano.

The Modern Sinawali can apply one stick against two sticks, one against two attackers, bangkaw against stick, bangkaw against gilingan, gilingan against arnis, mano-mano etc. The practitioner can combine two or more different Modern Sinawali.

PRINCIPLES OF A GOOD ARNISADOR

1. The real Arnisador holds firmly to his stick until the day he dies.

2. The Arnisador and sticks are one.

3. The Art of the hand is the art of the cane.

4. If someone throws rice grains to a skilled Arnisador not even a single grain can hit him.

5. The match and the candle represent an authentic disciple of Arnis.

6. The Art of Arnis is like wind; you can feel it but not necessarily see it.

7. Minimum effort maximum effect.
